It took four playoff holes for Daniel Chopra of Sweden to finally pocket the more than one million dollars that goes with a win at the $5,500,000 Mercedes-Benz Championship on the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii.
Chopra wins a new Mercedes sports car with the title - not bad for a guy who used to have his wife as his caddy. He also gets an invitation to the Masters.
Chopra birdied the final hole of a playoff with former Canadian Tour player Steve Stricker whose final round 64 lifted him into a tie at the end of regulation. Chopra just missed his birdie on the final regulation hole but all’s well that ends well.
Top Canadian was
Stephen Ames whose final round 66 lifted him to sole possession of third one stroke back of the leaders. His finish earns him $415,000. Not a bad start to the year.
Third round leader
Mike Weir struggled out of the gate with a couple bogeys before righting his surf board to finish alone in fourth place.
The two Canucks both had a chance to become the second Canadian to take this tournament, following Stan Leonard in 1958.
