The Canadian Tour

June 22, 2009

Mike Weir and Stephen Ames shared tenth place at the US Open completed today at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York. The event was won today by Lucas Glover by two strokes over Phil Mickelson, David Duval and third and second round leader Ricky Barnes.

Top amateur for the event was Abbotsford, B.C.'s Nick Taylor who finished with a share of 38th place. Talyor, who was in the top ten at the turn, has emerged as one of Canada's future golf stars.

Glover held on today despite a +3 as few players were able to break par. It was Glover's second PGA victory. But he went into the event leading the tour in driving on a course where few found the fairways too often.

Perhaps the bigger story was Duval. The former World's No. 1 player etered as a qualifier now ranked 882 in the world. He showed his former stoic talent, now with a few added pounds, as he returned after eight years in oblivion. Despite a triple bogey from a plugged lie in a bunker he rattled off three straight birdies to tie for a share of the lead with two holes to play. His 5-foot par putt on the 17th inexplicably caught the back of the lip and rimmed out. Still, his 71 was his best finish on the PGA Tour since he won the British Open eight years ago.

The expected charge from Tiger Woods never came, despite one of the best rounds of the day, he had too much ground to make up and could only muster a -1 today to finish with a share of sixth place.

For Weir the finish had to be a disappointment after he set an amazing standard on the opening round with a 64 to lead. Each day saw him slide back. Nevertheless, both he and Ames earn $154,600 for their efforts.
